Living in Mexico without being Mexican completely changes what medical coverage you need. Most insurance from your home country doesn’t cover care inside Mexico, and healthcare systems vary widely between countries. Before choosing a plan, there are a few questions worth answering first.
Does your current insurance cover you here?
The first step is confirming whether your current policy includes care in Mexico, and under what conditions. Many international plans limit coverage outside the home country or require care to be received abroad first and reimbursed later, which isn’t always practical in an emergency.
National plan, international plan, or both
A national plan covers care inside Mexico, generally with access to a network of private hospitals. An international plan also protects you if you travel or return to your home country. The right decision depends on how often you travel, where you prefer to be treated, and how important it is to have the same coverage in any country.
What to check before signing
Compare the hospital network, the deductible, coinsurance, and whether there are waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. A lower premium doesn’t always mean a better plan: sometimes it means a more limited network or a deductible that ends up costing more the moment you actually need to use the insurance.
